Every State Is Different
The process of becoming a real estate agent can vary depending on your state. In most cases, you will need to complete an education program and pass a real estate exam.
In order to get your license, you will need to attend an accredited real estate school. The school will provide you with all the information you need to pass the licensing exam. The education requirements can vary from state to state, so it is important to check with your local real estate commission for more information.
Once you have completed your education, you will need to take the real estate exam. This test will cover all the material that you learned in school. It is important to prepare for this test by studying and practicing as much as possible.
The time it takes to get a real estate license can vary depending on your state. In some cases, you may be able to take the licensing exam right after completing your education program.
It is important to check with your local licensing board for more information about the process in your state.

Real Estate License School
The first step in getting your real estate license is to sign up for your pre license course. Most states require you to attend an accredited real estate school in order to get your license.
The school will provide you with all the information you need to pass the real estate exam. You will learn about topics such as contracts, property law, and financing.
You will also have the opportunity to practice for the licensing exam by taking sample quizzes and tests. The more prepared you are for the test, the better chance you have of passing it on your first try.
Online vs. In-Person Real Estate School
How long it takes you to get your real estate license can also depend on whether you want to take your classes online or in-person.
Online real estate schools offer more flexibility, but you will need to be self-motivated in order to succeed. In-person real estate schools are a great option if you want more structure and guidance from your instructor.
Both online and in-person real estate schools provide the same education and preparation for the real estate exam. It is up to you to decide which option works best for you.
In general, I’ve seen a sales agent complete online real estate classes in as little as two to three weeks and as much as a few months. In-person usually takes a minimum of six weeks but can also take much longer.
Take The Real Estate License Exam
Once you’ve completed your real estate classes, you will need to take the real estate license exam. This test will cover all the material that you learned in school.
It is important to prepare for this test by studying and practicing as much as possible. The more prepared you are for the test, the better chance you have of passing it on your first try.
The time it takes to get a real estate license will depend on how many tries it takes you to pass your licensing exam. In most states, the average state exam pass rate on the first attempt is around 50%.
If you must retake the exam, you’ll typically need to wait a few days to a week then retry.

Next Step After The Real Estate Exam?
Once you’ve passed your licensing exam, you will need to complete a license application with your state’s licensing board. This application will ask for your personal information, such as your name and Social Security number.
You may also be asked to provide a copy of your driver’s license or passport.
Once the application is processed, you will receive an inactive real estate license in the mail.
With your inactive real estate license in hand, you’ll now need to choose a sponsoring broker or brokerage.
Choose the Right Real Estate Brokerage
When you are ready to start working as a real estate agent, you will need to choose a real estate broker. This can be a difficult decision, especially if you don’t know much about brokerages.
Here are some things to consider when choosing a real estate broker:
- The size of the company
- The type of company
- The location of the company
- The services offered by the company
- The commission split
- The training and support offered by the company
I’ve chosen to work with eXp Realty and couldn’t be happier with my decision. They offer a great commission split and plenty of training and support. They are also a 100% cloud-based brokerage, which means I can work from anywhere in the world.

Ultimately, once you’ve chosen a brokerage, you will need to complete a license application and submit it to the company.

General Requirements
Some general requirements that you need to be aware of that can affect how long it takes to get your real estate license are:
Age: You must be at least 18 years old to get a real estate license.
Education: Most states require you to have a high school diploma or equivalent in order to get your license.
Criminal Record: You may be ineligible for a real estate license if you have been convicted of a felony or other crime involving dishonesty.
Continuing Education
Now while this doesn’t directly affect how long it takes to get your real estate license, it is important to be aware of the continuing education requirements in your state.
Most states require real estate agents to complete a certain number of hours of continuing education every two or three years in order to keep their license active.
Broker License
If you’re wondering how long it takes to get your broker license, the answer is typically about two years.
In order to get your broker license, you will need to have an active real estate license and meet the education requirements of your state.
You will also need to complete a certain number of hours of continuing education and complete a minimum number of transactions.
You’ll then need to pass the real estate broker exam and complete your broker application.
Once you’ve completed this, you can now be your own broker or be an associate broker under a larger company.
