15. Revolutionary Road (2008)
First on our list of real estate movies is Revolutionary Road. This is a romantic drama film, directed by Sam Mendes and based off of a 1961 novel of the same name. The plot concerns a young couple in the 1950s who must navigate their personal problems. They become close friends with their realtor, who becomes a witness to the failure of their marriage. It features Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and Kathy Bates.
14. The Big Short (2015)
The Big Short is a biographical comedy-drama film, directed by Adam McKay, based off of a book of the same name. It explores the financial crisis and housing crash of 2008 and the collapse of the real estate bubble that led to it. Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt star in this film.
13. And So It Goes (2014)
This romantic comedy drama is directed by Rob Reiner and features Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton. It’s about a realtor who has turned his back on all his friends, family, and neighbors after the death of his wife. One day the realtor’s estranged son visits and drops off his granddaughter, who he never knew existed.
12. Pacific Heights (1990)
Pacific Heights is a psychological horror film, directed by John Schlesinger and featuring Melanie Griffith, Matthew Modine, and Michael Keaton. It’s about a couple who own a 19th century home in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, and end up renting a room to a violent man with a long history of wrongdoing.
11. The Queen of Versailles (2012)
This is a documentary film directed by Lauren Greenfield. It concerns Jackie and David Siegal, a wealthy couple who start constructing their private residence, one of the largest single-family homes in the nation. However, the decline of the economy in 2008 affects their progress.
10. Promised Land (2012)
This is a drama film directed by Gus Van Sant and features Matt Damon and John Krasinski. It explores the story of two petroleum company employees who visit a small town in order to buy drilling rights from the locals. They are successful at first, but soon meet some resistance after one of the town’s residents raises concerns about the safety of fracking.
9. The Break-Up (2006)
The Break-Up is another romantic comedy-drama film starring Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston, and directed by Peyton Reed. It explores the turbulent relationship of a couple, who live together in the same condo. After breaking up, neither is willing to move out, so they continue living together as roommates. However, once their realtor friend sells the condo, they are forced to decide what to do with their relationship.
8. He’s Just Not That Into You (2009)
This is a romantic comedy-drama film, which is directed by Ken Kwapis and based off of a self-help book of the same name. The plot follows nine different characters and explores the problems in their romantic lives. One of these characters is a real estate agent running his own business. The film features an ensemble cast, including Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, and Drew Barrymore.
7. Boiler Room (2000)
This is a crime drama film directed by Ben Younger. The plot concerns a young man who decides to become involved in a brokerage firm that scams clients by selling them stock in expired and fake companies. It features Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, and Ben Affleck.
6. Inside Job (2010)
Inside Job is a documentary film about the 2008 financial crisis, directed by Charles Ferguson. The film explores the systemic corruption in policies and banking practices within the financial services industry which ultimately caused the economic crisis.
5. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
This is a biographical drama film directed by Gabriele Muccino and starring Will Smith, about the life of Chris Gardner. This film isn’t specifically about real estate, but it shows the benefit of having a positive attitude in sales. Chris Gardner struggled with financial instability and homelessness, while working to make a living as a salesman.
4. The Money Pit (1986)
The Money Pit is a comedy-drama film directed by Richard Benjamin and featuring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. It’s about an attorney and his girlfriend who are forced to vacate their apartment. The attorney learns about a million dollar distress sale mansion from his realtor friend, and he and his girlfriend decide to purchase it. However, the cost of restoring the mansion soon outweighs its initial price.
3. Catch Me If You Can (2002)
While this isn’t specifically a real estate related film, it still has great sales tips that can be applied to real estate. Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio star in this biographical crime film directed by Steven Spielberg, about the life of Frank Abagnale. Abagnale achieved fame for successfully conning millions of dollars through check fraud when he was only 18 in the 1960s. Abagnale used many classic sales techniques while impersonating various careers, such as an airline pilot, doctor, and lawyer.
2. I Love You, Man (2009)
Jason Segel and Rashida Jones star in this romantic comedy directed by John Hamburg. The film concerns a real estate agent who proposes to his girlfriend, only to realize he doesn’t have anyone to be his best man. He embarks on a plan to find a male friend to be in his wedding. However, his new friend begins causing trouble between him and his bride.
1. Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)
Last on our list of real estate movies is Glengarry Glen Ross. This is a drama film directed by James Foley, and based off of a Pulitzer-prize winning play of the same name. The plot concerns four real estate agents who use dishonest tactics to pursue their leads, and don’t have much success. Their boss sends in a trainer to motivate them. The trainer tells them that they have one week to compete for the best, most promising Glengarry leads. Only two of the agents will get these leads, and the other two will be fired. The film features Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, and Alec Baldwin.
